View Full Version : Electric shock workout??
acappy January 3rd, 2005, 04:22 PM weird question...
My grandma bought me this really weird massager for Christmas which totally doesn't work as a massager BTW. It's 2 little gel pad electric shock things that have varying intensites and modes. You put them on wherever and they make your muscles flex. I had it on my shoulders to see if it would actually feel like amassage, but it ended up really feeling like I'd just been lifting weights from all of the contracting adn relaxing of my shoulders. I remember an "ab workout" item being sold a few years ago that sounds like it does the exact same thing. The question is, would this work at all since you are contracting and using the muscle (although involuntarily) ? I don't mean as a sustitute to excercise by any means, I was just thinking if it does anything at all, perhaps I could have it on while I'm being a desk jockey for 9 hours a day.
Thanks

However, they are pretty cool.

rtestes January 3rd, 2005, 07:31 PM At one point in early 60s they used to sell one that came in a case with all sorts of pads, it could really shoot the juice to you, like shock treatments. Cost hundreds of dollars. I mean you were jerking all over the place.
My memory is that they were forced off the market because the govt feared cancer problems with internal organs. When I saw the little ones that they have sold for last few years, I wondered how long they would be on market.
eleonardo January 3rd, 2005, 08:31 PM Bruce Lee used them.
Not my cup o' tea though.
acappy January 3rd, 2005, 08:40 PM But they do work though? I was wondering if they did anything at all really and it kinda sounds like it from the replies I've gotten (thank you). Of course I'm not going to get some fabulous results, but if it does anything at all that would be better than nothing whilst sitting at the desk.

Not really, I would have some dumbells there, if possible. :db:

Thanks...those hurt :tu:
kmfisher January 4th, 2005, 04:25 PM Yeah, Bruce Lee used them while working out. But, the shockers don't make you stronger or in shape. At least the over-the-counter ones don't. Doctors do have them for medical rehab purposes. But those are much more powerful than the home use ones.
1FastGTX January 4th, 2005, 04:31 PM Yes, the ones at your doctor or chiropractor's office will probably be much stronger than the at-home "tens unit" (sp?).
They work well supposidly for back pain; I've used them at my chiropractor's office before right before an adjustment.
akm3 January 4th, 2005, 05:06 PM I did a search for them and came up with more.........interesting(?) uses for them?
Completely inapproriate for the forum however.
Use your imagination.
Let me know how that goes :P

chigum January 5th, 2005, 06:29 AM yes mate they do work ,,, i thought nothing could tighten my glutes apart from some lunges but these machines do work stick with it use it everyother day and it will take time but 4-6 months u will notice the improvements
Acliff January 5th, 2005, 06:41 AM I have one of those powertec things with multiple pads. I don't know how I got it, but I have one, worth around 100 quid I think. Having used it a couple of times, I can see how and why they work, but for my own mental satisfaction, I'd rather put in physical effort to work muscles.
However I may have a go at using them for training to hold my leg up higher for kicks.
NEdge January 5th, 2005, 01:29 PM Interesting, my mum tried something similar with 100% belief that it would work. Last summer she asked me how to gain muscle since it was a complete waste of time (she must have tried them for a year or more). Her diet sucks, so maybe that was the problem since I don’t see how she could gain muscle with her diet anyway.
Of course sarcasm is also hard to discern over the internet although starting with 'yes mate' might be a clue.
