View Full Version : Protein source & Lifting question
don_1987 January 3rd, 2005, 06:33 AM Got some question here... Hope you guys can give me some idea on my current diet and my training program... :jumping:
First of all, if I'll be lifting first thing in the morning, should I eat a meal first, or should I lift on an empty stomach? Which will be more beneficial? By the way, I'll be lifting for only 45 minutes, 1 bodypart per day. :db:
Second, most of my protein source (which is fish) usually comes from canned goods. Some of the most common protein source I consume are; Tuna in water, sardines in tomato sauce, mackerel in natural oil, mackerel in tomato sauce and squids in natural ink / soy sauce.
Is this good or bad? I know that most of this stuff contains salt, but it's the most convinience source of protein. :eat:
Ludvig78 January 3rd, 2005, 06:51 AM Hi!
The sources are good, what about the amount?

don_1987 January 3rd, 2005, 08:48 AM Well, every meal I usually consume 1 can, that's about 155 gram/5.5 oz. Is it ok to eat canned foods like sardines in tomato sauce, mackerel in natural oil etc.
It says that a can of sardines or mackerel in tomato sauce has around 21 pro/6 carb/6 fat.
A can of mackerel in natural oil has 37 pro/0 carb and 9 fats. But the best bet is tuna in water, 40 grams/0 carb/1 fats.
Do you think it's a good source of protein? Most of my protein come from this stuffs, taste good too...
aaaaaa1 January 3rd, 2005, 11:17 AM squids in natural ink?? :d_eek:
StoneGRMI January 3rd, 2005, 12:09 PM Yes it is a great source of protein. It is ideal that all your sources of protein are from real food. A lot of people (such as myself) use protein shakes for convinence and to make up from some protein we didnt get with real food. You never want to lift on an empty stomach, make sure to get a pro/carb meal for breakfast before lifting.
1FastGTX January 3rd, 2005, 02:06 PM I would not recommend lifting on an empty stomach. Some people can handle it but it makes me feel very nausious and my intensity is terrible.
I would recommend that you have a pre workout meal consisting of both protein and carbs around 45 minutes before the workout. Sooner should be fine (20-30 minutes) provided you're not really full (you shouldn't actually be "really full" ever I don't think, since you should be consuming 5-7 smaller meals throughout the day). Be sure to get a good post workout meal as well, I like simple carbs at this time (perfect time for MRP consumption for me).
Perhaps off-topic -- you are doing 1 bodypart and it takes you 45 minutes? Wow how many sets are you doing? Just curious.

Hahaha... I know it sounds kinda weird, but lately I've been hitting 1 bodypart with lower intensity but higher repetition and sets. It may not make me sweat like hell, but the DOMS feel really good...
jgmx January 4th, 2005, 12:48 AM have you thought about chicken breast or eggbeaters??
just watch the colesterol w/ the fish :tucool:
taffer January 4th, 2005, 02:06 AM 1- eat before you train (as explained above)
2- eat carbs after you train, oats, poatoes, rice, get someinto you, also i would add whey, its optimal PWO

Yup chicken breast is also my protein source. Like I said my protein source are usually real foods. Chicken, fish, beef and eggs. I do have a protein powder, but I seldomly use it. Man, I may be like a guy from the stone age era, but here where I live, I don't even know what's an eggbeater. Sure, I heard most of you guys talk about it, but what is it?
ffactoryxx January 4th, 2005, 12:32 PM Google is your friend. Just kidding (http://www.eggbeaters.com/products/faqs.jsp)

Do you want soreness or do you want muscle growth? :D

txitalian January 4th, 2005, 06:29 PM Different people respond differently so there's no way anyone can tell
you what will work for you. Experiment and find out what's good for
you. I also workout first thing in the morning and if I eat before I lift I always feel sluggish.

inurb January 4th, 2005, 06:38 PM I just wanted to add that after I started eating solid food protein meals instead of like 3-4 protein shakes a day, I noticed dramatic fat loss and muscle gain. I guess your body likes it better when it's solid protein for some reason.

That was my lifting session last week because I get really bored and actually kindda lose my willing to lift. So to combat boredom, I try to experiment a little and still lift even when I don'nt feel like lifting.
But this week, I'll stick to the 2-3 bodyparts per day, but I'l still keep it under an hour... :bb:
