If you can get your heart rate into your fat burning zone (120 to 140 bpm?), and if you can get a good sweat going on, then it's a lot better than sitting still.

I agree, anything that gets your heart rate up to 120-140 bpm for 45-60 minutes -- that's going to be good for you, you'll lose fat there.

I think it would be VERY difficult to march in place long enough and with enough intensity to get your heart rate into the aerobic zone. You will burn more calories than sitting on the couch, yes, but in a much less than optimal manner. If you are trying to burn fat, don't kid yourself into thinking this is cardio. If lack of equipment is the issue, you may just want to find a big hill near your house and walk up that a few times a day.

Sure it will work, do it in front of a TV. get a little change in moves. go for five minutes with a high step, throw in a kick every so often, do a free-hand squat, move those arms, box. Mix it up.

Look around in real life for exercise moments. Suck abs in while driving. take two steps at a time. do push ups off a chair with arms. It all counts.

Air boxing is actually a great way to elevate the heart rate while marching. I've worn a heart monitor while marching in place before, and I've found that when my heart rate starts to get too low I can use a pair of 3 lbs weights (or maybe some cans of chili) and air box until my heart rate comes back up to par.

Another good "in place" exercise is stair stepping. You can do it with two legs, one leg, hopping, and side to side for variety. (THAT'S a good work out!)

After a summer of marching drum corps with a contra on my shoulder... I'll vouch for the cardio benefits. Of course- I was 16 and we practiced 11 hours a day. :p
