View Full Version : sugars = alcohol?

a homade tomato sauce that sells at Whole foods lists Fat = 3g, Sodium = 170 mg, Total Carb = 6g, Dietary Fiber = 2g, Sugars= 3g, protein = 1g. The sauce has no sugar in it. I am trying to calculate a recipe on fitday. Is the "sugars" on the label the same as Alchohol on fitday when you're customizing food?

A tomato (http://www.tomato.org/health/nutri.html) has sugar in it. It doesn't mean white grandulated sugar.

ya its like eating a peach, the sugars in it are not going to harm your diet
unless: there is sugar added... look for wierd sugars on the ingrediants... and that kinda thing
Justitia Mon, January 3rd, 2005, 01:30 AM Yes, I understand that tomato (and a number of other vegetables) have sugars in them and I also understand that it's that sugar that the list of ingredients is referring to.
But what I am trying to find out is the different ways of labeling. Fitday.com allows you to customize a food, so that you can put in your own food once, put in its macronutrients, etc, and then you can just click on the name of the food to add it to your consumption for the day when you eat it.
So for example, I have a specific salad every day for lunch. It has a bunch of ingredients, lettuce radishes, mushrooms, peppers, etc. instead of calculating that up every day, I "customize" it once on Fitday, call it "lunch salad" and every day as I tally up my food on Fitday, when I click on "lunch salad", Fitday automatically puts in all the elements of my salad, i.e., how much protein, carbs, fats, potassium, etc.
One of the sections to fill in for the ingredients of your customized food is called "ALchohols". I was asking whether that is the same thing on a label as "sugars" as it is on my sauce. Sometimes I see "sugar alchohols" on labels--so I was surmising that "alchohols" and "sugars" on labels meant the same thing but people sometimes called it "sugars", sometimes "alchohol" and sometimes "sugar alchohol."
I was just wondering if anybody knew.
A long explanation for what will be a short answer, if anyone here knows, i.e, the answer is either "yes" or "no".

Alcohol is a carbohydrate but it contains about 7 kcal per gram.

tensdanny Mon, January 3rd, 2005, 05:27 AM by alcohol it means booze. I'm not positive on the organic makeup, but i believe it sucrose is c6h1206. An alcohol can have any number of carbons followed by an oxygen-hydrogen bonded together. It is a very small difference. I think Griffin(deafngari) would be able to explain it better as he is a biochemistry major(i think).

Thanks for the inside information. ;)

Justitia Mon, January 3rd, 2005, 03:15 PM There is no sugar or anything related to that in the sauce, it is just tomatoes, olive oil, spices and the like. So on their list of nutrition elements( i.e., grams fo fat, protein, carbs) they have a separate category called "sugars". I've seen this before on many products that have no actual sugar added to them. Is there a connection to alcochol on the fitday label--or what else is it?
:p
featherz Mon, January 3rd, 2005, 03:20 PM Alcohol means actual alcohol (Gin, beer, whatever). No relation to sugar alcohols, which are artificial sweeteners (maltitol, etc).
