View Full Version : ATW Blend v. Isolate Taste concerns

I have been using the blend since I learned about it here. But now I am working up a more rigorous food plan and I am beginning to resent that extra little fat and carb in the Blend. It limits me on the other foods I can barely have (like beef, beef and did I mention beef? and lamb and pork too.) I, of course, can make do, but now I feel I should switch to the isolate. But I am concerned about taste. I really love the blend. I drink it all the time in 4 flavors (chocolate being number 1).

How do people find the isolate? I have a big order at ATW which hasn't been processed yet and I need to call them in the AM to change what I need (it is now Sunday night Jan 2.)

Taste is what I am focusing on-- though some threads here suggest that the protein is of better quality in the isolate--but I understood that it is the same Whey isolate but the blend, well, blends some other stuff in.

The expense difference doesn't concern me too much but it is not completley out of consideration.

The isolate is a good protein source, best for PWO nutrition... its taste leaves something to be desired. Lest you be counting to the gnat's ass on your diet, is the 2-g's of carbs per serving of whey for the blend making that big a difference?

Personally I prefer the ATW Isolate taste over the blend - always have from day one. Honestly, there's really not much difference between the two products as far as taste goes (IMO, of course).

It's the hydrolyzed whey that takes some getting used to! At first I could barely choke it down, but now I actualy enjoy it mixed with a scoop of Kent Nutrition dextrose. :tu:

I know, I'm weird.

Not only the 2 grams of carbs but the 1 gram of fat...want to shrink that gnat's ass. But I think in the meantime, I will shrink my order with ATW and try the isolate in two flavors for PWO (Banana and orange) and two flavors that are my favorite, chocolate and vanilla (with strawberry close behind..such an old fashioned girl am I. :d_smile: )

Thanks John for your advice too--but from all I have heard about the hydrolyzed whey--you are wierd

Most people around here will tell you you're wasting your money by spending more than you have to. Two grams of sugar is going to have very little effect on insulin. I wouldn't fret about that at all. Nor the fat. Saturated or unsaturated, you can never have too much fat in a cutting diet. Several people including jeremy likness have said they've had the best results from blends. From a macronutrient breakdown they're both about the same, and i wouldn't worry about that. From a taste, thats a matter of preference. It's the difference in the pocket books and the lack of difference in the results(unless your diet is absolutely perfect) should be the determining factor.

On a side note, you've been sticking to your plan for quite awhile and been very consisent! Congratulations!!

You are now talking about fine tuning and improving your diet rather then "Getting back on the bandwagon", that is the kind of resolve that guarantees you will reach all your goals!!

Good job!

Thanks the encouragement Allen. I can always count on you for that. But in all honesty, I have not stuck as much as it seems. During this transition phase, I am moving to a completely different work-out routine. As a result I stopped what I was doing (stupid) while I was trying to figure out exactly what my new program will be and have lost a lot of muscle gains in the process (I stopped BOdy Pump and Pilades). I have kept up marginally with my cardio and my food has not been too great. I am amazed what not doing Body Pump for a few weeks will do, or rather undo.

But today I start my new weight training. It is all new exercsies for me--so I am full prepared ot be a complete klutz..but you can't go on a journey without taking the first steps, no matter how fumbling they are.

I have to say--comming here to John Stone Fitness has completely changed my life. I was always into fitness to a varying degree but what I have learned here and have been motivated to do and how much life has changed in the last 5 months since I joined, seems nothing more than miraculous and I wasn't even paying attention. I was just reading and incorporating bit by bit what I liked. This also filled a huge void in my life that desparately needed to be filled with healthy supportive stuff.

I am just so grateful to everyone here, the dedication the honesty, the non-shaming, the non-blaming--even the respectfulness when people get into somewhat heated debates. They are always informative. And of course John is to be commended in this. One of the most important aspects of being a leader is to set the tone for everyone. And John has done a great job.

So I am off to the gym in a few moments.

you're doing great. A truly fantastic job. I wouldn't worry about eating absolutely perfectly healthy, and exercising at just the right time everyday as much as i would being an overall active, health conscious person. Every little bit helps, and doing something is far better than doing nothing. With that said, keep up the great work, and hope to see you hit your goals very soon! :tu:

I forget who makes it but I got some free samples of fruit-punch flavored whey awhile back and it was awesome. The macros were ok too from what I remember. I think the manufacturer was called Science Nutrition or something like that.

I bought samples of both from allthewhey and didn't notice enough of a taste difference that matters. Other than the unflavored of both tastes like cr&p when mixed with just water. But I guess it's unflavored so you can mix it with things other than just water. Of course, rocket scientist that I am, I didn't figure that out until afterwards...

I don't know about other brands re: taste, mixing, etc. since I'm new to all this.

Syntrax Nectar? if it's the stuff they serve at this hotel I stayed at last month, it's decent. strawberry-kiwi flavor I think.

I vote for the ATW blend. I found the choc and especially vanilla iso had a nasty taste and a worse aftertaste, plus the powder is so light the slightest breeze sends it flying all over the place. I ended up throwing the vanilla away.

the blend is fine; I esp. like the orange flavor w/my PWO dex :) maybe someday I'll butch it up and try the hydrolyzed...

I love citrus & fruit punch flavored stuff. Search Google for "Protein Ice - Fruit Punch Freeze - 20 oz".
