Hey guys,

I just wondered, how much will cutting sugar out of my diet help in weight or should I say Fat loss. I am 25, 5'8 and currently 150lbs, I would like to shed about 10-15 pounds of fat if possible, especially trying to work off my mid-section, which isnt bad, but could be alot better (no six-pack if fat covers the abs :o ). I used to swim on a team and would like to get that build back. If there is anything you can offer, please chime in, I want to hear from all of the great people on this site for helpful fat loss tips. Can't wait to read what you guys have to offer. Thanks :)

Hey guys,

I just wondered, how much will cutting sugar out of my diet help in weight or should I say Fat loss.

It'll do wonders, specifically if you're doing a cardio/weightlifting routine and have a solid diet that you follow religiously.

Before I put my transformation plan into motion I got used to not having any refined sugars in my diet. I stopped putting it in my coffee and lost 10lbs withing a few months. I don't drink pop or diet pop EVER. I get all the sugars I need from fruit, etc...anything where the sugar is naturally occurring. But even then I have to watch it!

I hope this (and all replies that follow) help you reach your goals!

If there's a healthy piece of food that has sugar which you can't live without, it probably won't hurt you much. Since you're probably not on a deadline (like trying to get 10% BF before summer), you can go ahead and have that food once (maybe twice) a day, and not worry much about it. Much of my diet's sugar comes from fruits, and like Ken above me, I keep it moderated. Trust me, there's some really tasty, non sugar foods out there.

I am pretty set on taking all sugar out, besides fruit but aside from that I can do without it all, I am not a candy or desert buff at all, so I have that in my favor. I just wanted to know how great an effect on weight loss that would be. Plus any Fat loss tips that can be offered. ;)

Sugar are carbohydrates. However, most of the carb's we eat should come from other sources than sugar. If we eat a lot of sugar, as in chocolate (or alcohol), some of it will be transformed into fat.... So having a candybar, gives you both fat and sugar, and sugar that will transform into even more fat than what you ate in the first place. Scary. So staying away from sugar will help you in your fat loss process, I'm certain. Good luck :tu:

taking sugar out is almost impossable, there is sugar in almost everything.

What do you mean by cutting out sugar? most people would probably mean not put it in their tea and coffee and not eating chocolate, but there's sugar in fruit, in healthy cereals, in low fat yogart, in bread etc etc.

You're better to look beyond just sugar and look more to bad food and good food, would do more for you in the long run.

I guess what I mean by cutting sugar is this: I dont actually use any sugar at all, all of my sweets are artificial, via sweet n low or splenda. Besides Fruit sugars, which I probably dont get enough of, I dont really get any sugar at all. besides what might be hidden in some breads, but I am currently wiening my self off of Soft Drinks, which I figure if I replace soft drinks with Tea, and water, and stop drinking anything with sugar in it period, I should be able to increase my fat loss much quicker. Plus I dont drink alcohol so I dont have to worry about beer or anything like mixed drinks. This is just to clairify what I mean by sugar, and cutting it out of my diet.

I guess we should clraify types of sugar: simple sugar (glucose) - the one that you use to sweaten your coffe and fructose - sugar from fruits. Glucose should be limited as much as possible ( I don't use it at all as I don't drink tea or coffee). Fructose could not and should not be cut out. But you should limit the amount of fructoes you are getting. I'de say 2 apples, a pear and a banana a day will keep you satisfied. As to craving for something sweet, I use fat-freee/sugar-free ice cream. One serving a weak and I am happy.

As you may already know on a fatloss diet you need to eat your veggies (some say especially later in the day). Regardless, veggies have sugar. For example,

A cup cup of green peppers (which is about 30 calories) and 7 grams of carbs; 4 grams of these carbs are sugar

a cup of broccoli has less sugar at about 1.5 grams of sugar

a cup of green beans has about 2 grams of sugar

a cup of cucumbers about 2 grams

½ cup of peas have 4 grams of sugar (but it also has more calories so as a percentage it's good too)

Now these sugar amounts come with good fibrous carbs as well, but the point is while you don't want too much sugar (especially processed) some will be okay and is necessary. Track your amounts versus progress and find what works for you. For me (even during a cut) i usually have a serving of fruit during breakfast

Thanks for starting this "jnt78"...

I had to jump in because I suspect my progress could also be lagging due to sugar.

I use 4-5 cubes of "Raw" sugar with my coffee (usually X 2 cups = 8-10 cubes total @ 16 calories each) in the morning with or before breakfast.

Every other beverage during the day is WATER except for maybe one serving of Soy Milk.

Even though I'm sure it gets burned off during the weights or cardio session, would this still likely slow down the progress of us sugary coffee / tea beverage drinkers?

Rather than the calories itself, is the main problem that it affects our morning insulin levels terribly after a night's fast?

Planning to move straight on to plain ol' green tea soon anyway... just one more push to help though...

Thanks,

G
