View Full Version : OK im confused - body fat %
gr1fter Thu, February 12th, 2004, 02:18 PM On Jan 15th i was 152lbs - 22% body fat according to this electic node thingy at the local gym.
I weighed my self every day for a month and now I am 142-143lbs. I went to get my body fat measured again and now it says I am 23% body fat. WTF!
This cannot be right because:
1: i no im not losing that much lean mass because I have gained Massive strength in the past month.
2: i notice a lot more definition in my body and even people noticed my face is thinning out, not to mention my pants and shorts are all to big now.
I can see my top 4 abs which i couldnt before. If i get my hands on a digital camera i will take a picture.
but anyways.... should i be worried about this or should i just disregard the machine based reading.
Im going to find some calipors and get back with ya on the results.
Bunko Thu, February 12th, 2004, 09:03 PM I would say, ignore the "electric node thingy".
You could try the army method of BF% estimation suggested in the other thread.
Measure your abdomen, neck and height and try :
(86.01*(LOG10(abdomen - neck)))-(70.041*(LOG10(height)))+36.76
Wop Thu, February 12th, 2004, 09:10 PM Or you could use the chart (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/kurilla5.pdf) they provide. Saves you from having to do the math.
Collegefour Thu, February 12th, 2004, 11:15 PM Hmmm...military thing says 29%, Healthcentral.com says 23.5%, lowest reading on my Tanita says 31%....so lets see...add, then divide by 3....27.8%? Hmm....maybe I'll just stick with Healthcentral.com :D
Johan Fri, February 13th, 2004, 02:41 AM Are you are always doing the measurements at exactly the same time every day? Otherwise your body could have different hydration levels depending on when you do the measurements, which reflects on the measurements done with electric impulses.

Berran Fri, February 13th, 2004, 03:10 AM I programmed a calculator for that army meathod of calculating your body fat if anyone is interested...

SCHTEEVIE Fri, February 13th, 2004, 03:35 AM hey - thanks for doing that!
my test came out to within 1% of mybodycomp and one of the other online tests I have seen floating around - so it seems pretty accurate!
Sake Ninja Fri, February 13th, 2004, 04:26 AM If you are actually at 23% BF, I'd like to know how your abs are showing :D

Well, there's a foolproof 3 step method:
1. suck in
2. flex
3. pull back (stretch) your fat
Boom! Instant abs! :D
Seriously though, keep in mind that body fat is not limited to your midsection. Some people carry less fat around their waist than they do on their legs.
Nonetheless, I find it hard to believe your body fat would measure that high after dropping 10lbs.
gr1fter Fri, February 13th, 2004, 01:37 PM ok guys after a full day of frustration, I took some of your guys advice and did the online method and I was coming up with 15.5 - 16.0 %
I then called all the local physician's and found a triathlon training center that said they would measure my body fat using calipers. I went there and they measured me ( god it hurt :p ) and i was 15.1%!
I feel much better now - phewwww
