View Full Version : Any car guys/girls here?
Chris November 22nd, 2004, 01:11 PM Just wondering if any of you love to mod cars as much I do :D Which usually during winter is the best time in my opinion because the cars are always stuck in the garage with the snow.
My current project: 2001 Camaro
The first few mods are extremely easy: Basic exterior changes
1) Replacing the front grill and installing a carbon fiber and two HID fogs.
2) Replacing stock low beams with a 4300 HID kit, high beams with a 6000 kit, and stock fogs with most likely something over 7k (I know anything over 6000 is pointless, but these stock fogs are just for appearance now anyway and I really want that color contrast).
3) Lowering the suspension about a 1/2 inch and 17" Chrome spinners
4) Replacing stock tail lights with either carbon or chrome, not sure yet.
and lastly, changing the current dual into a quad exhaust :tu:
Future mods include: Induction Z hood, supercharger, 6" chrome wing and metallic blue/black/purple cham paint job.
Depending how it turns out, I might actually keep this one and not get the new LS2, guess we'll see what kinda offers I get for the car when i'm done and put it on the market
Skoorb November 22nd, 2004, 01:48 PM I probably would be a bit if I was single, but as it is there is definitely no spare money lying around for it, so both of my cars are stock...
1FastGTX November 22nd, 2004, 01:59 PM 2001 Grand Prix GTX.
Mods from SLP Engineering: GTX Conversion package including ram air, hood, SLP Exhaust including dual/dual tips, stripes package, floor mats.
Other mods: Dynomax mufflers, DUB Supercharger pulley system, drilled t-stat (yes I drilled holes in it!), NGK plugs and wires, some other stuff I can't remember.
I have not made any updates to it in a couple years. It just got kinda old for some reason. Took it to the track a few times, it's pretty fast for a "grocery getter" lol. I'm looking to get a new vehicle soon though, looking at the new F150s....
Bluestreak November 22nd, 2004, 02:22 PM Sounds like you're more into the appearance aspect. I prefer 'em to go as fast as they look. I currently have a fully-built 302 Mustang for a daily driver (which is FUGLY but fast right now, I'm working on the body as often as I can) and I have a 1973 full size Pontiac Grandville I've been working on for the past 11 years.
But the centerpiece of my collection is my '99 30th Anniversary Trans Am, purchased brand new on April 30th, 1999.
Mods to date?
-Lou's Short Stick (installed by Lou himself, he's a friend of mine and works out at my gym)
-Custom 3" exhaust with a 3" cutout and Dynomax Ultra-Flo 1100-CFM muffler
-160 degree tstat and SLP fan switch
-Taylor Thundervolt wires
-Full BMR suspension package
-GMPP Hot Cam w/LS6 springs
-ASP underdrive and alternator pullies
-Carbon Fiber Whisper induction lid
-Grotyohann (now QTP) 1-7/8ths primary headers and off road y-pipe
-Dyno tuned by Norris Motorsports and Superchips Programming
-Last dyno was 441-HP, 421-TQ
That's all I can think of right now. Every single mod was installed by myself with the help of friends. Only thing I didn't do was weld the exhaust, my buddy did that for me. The appearance is 100% stock right down to putting the original tailpipes being put back on with the new exhaust. Only the idle gives away the mods. Best 1/4 mile time is an 11.68 @ 118.5 mph.
There ain't an LS2 out there that can keep up with me - I've already handed a new LS2-powered Corvette owner his ass. He thought he'd be cool and rev at me to get me to run, and I did... I left him like he was tied to a tree. Most 'Vette owners can't drive worth a shit anyway.
I'm an expert in LS1 modifications and I have built everything you can think of where an LS1 is concerned. I've built several Stage II motors. The proudest achievement was the installation of an LS1-based 427 big-bore stroker in my best friend's Camaro SS convertible (1 of 1 Camaro SS 'verts built that year in triple white!). The longblock was assembled by MTI in Texas and shipped to us for installation. It put down 516-RWHP/498-RWTQ. He and I built that car ourselves with the occasional assistance of some friends when extra manpower was necessary. Norris Motorsports maintains, programs and services the car now.
My car is already well endowed in the appearance department and I have a half-dozen 1st place or Best of Show trophies for it. I don't show it anymore, it takes too much work to keep it show worthy and I prefer to drive it. We don't have the snow problems down here. My best scores ever at judged shows were 118/120 and 243/250. I've never been in a show judged higher than 250 points. Many thanks to my wife on that one for having arms small enough to clean and Armor-All the hoses all the way back at the firewall under the cowl! Can't find a wife much cooler than that...
Stick with the LS1 for at least a few years. GM never works the bugs out for about the first 2~3 model years. The LS1 was perfected by '01~'02 and you already have the ideal motor - your LS1 is most likely based on the LS6 (Z06 Corvette) block. From early '01 and forward, all LS1's were built with the LS6 enhanced block. I can eyeball it and tell you if you have it, but it's hard to explain. It has to do with some areas they route out on the sides of the LS6 block that is not characteristic of an LS1 block.
Good luck with your project.

Bluestreak November 22nd, 2004, 02:51 PM Where the heck do you get the money to do that kind of stuff?
Four years of college, about 50+ hours a week at the office, 10~12 hours on weekends as a studio musician... and a very, very understanding wife [i](in the picture above). Squeezing in time to work on the kiddies ain't easy, but I make time, even if I'm outside when it's dark.

That's your Trans AM Bluestreak? I'm pretty sure I've seen it around numerous times (I know we've discussed this before, but that's the first pic I've seen of your car).

That's my car... what you can see of it... :D. I'm sure you have... I have the only one worth looking at in this area anymore (the only two others I know of were owned by college kids whose mommies gave it to them, and the cars were ragged out). I know I've seen your GTX in the vicinity of Dean/University before. You're likely to see my Mustang more often, the Trans Am only leaves her air-conditioned garage on very, very nice days anymore.

I just noticed the picture of your car in front of the old Indian Motorcycles shop. We used to hang out on that corner and pick up races there with the schleps who didn't know what we were running or how to drive... back in the days when I could be found street racing.
Also... that Indian Motorcycles building is now my gym. ;) That's where Steel Mill Gym (http://www.steelmillgym.com/orlandogym/index.htm) relocated to in March of 2003, just before I started my transformation.
1FastGTX November 22nd, 2004, 03:36 PM Yeah I'm positive I've seen that gorgeous car around more than once. There's another one (or is it you??) that looks very similar but has BLUE rims. Actually, it may be a Firehawk, I don't remember. I see that one all the time too.
Yeah I saw a couple GPs and TAs/Cameros in that parking lot one night and just pulled in. Turned out I knew a few of the guys there so I hung out for a while and just BS'd with them. Yeah, that's the corner of 436 and 50, and yes thats right there by Steel Mill. Nice place by the way. That's where Porter trained so I have some respect for that gym. :)

My car *IS* the one with blue rims. This one isn't my car, but it's the same thing.

JMR November 22nd, 2004, 03:56 PM I don't really care for those blue rims... Cool stuff guys. I did freelance work for a dozen or so car magazines for five years. Got tired of running all over the place covering races every other weekend. Too much work when you've got a real job to go along with it. No projects at my house at the moment. Just my stock 1998 Z28 with 195,000 miles on it.

Oh man then I've seen you way more often than I thought!! Your car is unbelievable!!! I remember riding with a friend a while ago and we saw you, and he was like "I dunno about those wheels," but I was like "I DO, THEY'RE TIGHT!!!!"
If you ever see a GTX honking at you don't worry, it's just me saying "hello!"
Bluestreak November 22nd, 2004, 04:26 PM If you ever see a GTX honking at you don't worry, it's just me saying "hello!"
Careful! I'm the cleanest one about, but not the only one around! If the car is spotless, it's a reasonably sunny day (most likely a weekend, it doesn't venture out most weekdays), and there's really loud guitar oriented music emanating from said vehicle, it's me.
I've never had a single soul profess anything but love for those wheels. When they're properly maintained, they are so blue that they have a purple sheen to them. Most people don't believe that the car is stock in appearance. The first question is always, "Where'd you get those wheels? I want a set!"
JMR November 22nd, 2004, 05:18 PM I'll be your first! I hate those blue wheels. Sorry!
1FastGTX November 22nd, 2004, 06:25 PM Ouch
BigDawg78 November 23rd, 2004, 12:56 AM I've always been a car guy.... currently I'm driving a Grand Prix GTP. Nice little supercharged 3.8 V6... modified with smaller pulley, cold air intake, 1.9 roller rockers, sway bars, poly endlinks, lowering springs, 18" wheels, among other things... but, I'm tired of it myself. Had it for 3+ years now. Before it I had a Camaro Z28 (LT1) that was supercharged... putting out 450+ hp. Now that was a fun car! I miss it. Here's one of my GrandPrix.

Dude your GTP is TIGHT! That is a great look! What size pulley are you running? I got a DUB (Dial-Ur-Boost), so you can swap it out really quickly (takes about 2 minutes). It's neat, but I never change it. Like you I'm sick of my car now. I think I'm going to get a truck, but you never know. I was thinking of doing springs next, but I'm really just getting tired of spending the money and time on a car. :)
A blown Z28....WOW. I'll bet that WAS a fun car.
Yeah man nice to see another GP owner here. :)
Craig November 23rd, 2004, 07:44 AM Apart from an air induction kit, my Celica is only modded for appearance (and then I like it done quite subtle). The main mods have been some 18" wheels (with 2" drop) and a brushed aluminium interior.

There was a nice white firebird/hawk in huntsville, AL with blue rims that I used to see quite a bit.
I like the chrome beemer. I've seen a chrome audi in some picture too, owned by a middle eastern shiek or something.
Chris November 23rd, 2004, 01:56 PM Yeah, i'm definitely more into the appearance aspect, but don't get me wrong, smoking the new vettes would be really really sweet :D
With all your experience Blue, soon as I get around to real performance, you'll be one of the first guys I come to for help
Great looking cars guys, let's so do a JSF auto show one day
Don't really have many pictures of the car, but here's a nice one, the day I bought it, was pretty excited to give it a nice test run
Bluestreak November 23rd, 2004, 02:03 PM There was a nice white firebird/hawk in huntsville, AL with blue rims that I used to see quite a bit.
If it had the blue rims, it was more than likely a sister car to mine... another 30th Anniversary, unless the 'Hawk owner somehow procured a set of 30th T/A rims. All the 30th T/A's are 100% identical on the outside. The rims are hard to come by, but I have three spares just in case sitting in my attic. Every time I see pieces/parts exclusive to the 30th anniversary cars on Ebay, I buy 'em. I have floor mats, badges, door inserts, etc. This car will be left to my kids when I'm gone.
My car was a childhood dream made good. During the Superbowl in 1997, they debuted the new Trans Am body styling with the commercial showing the Trans Am eating the Ferrari (which isn't far from true, I've raced three Ferrari's at the track and beaten them all!). My dad and I watched that commercial together and our jaws hit the floor. From that day on, I knew I'd one day have that car...
May as well tell the whole story...
Back in '99, the WS6 package was extremely rare and hard to come by (for you non-Trans Am, the WS6 is the latest model T/A's with the ram air hood, upgraded suspension and 17" wheels). The 30th anniversary cars were impossible to get; you had to be very lucky to get one as there were only 1,600 to be made.
Two days before I got my car, I'd been hired full time at my first engineering firm. With only a letter of intent to hire, my dad and I went car shopping. Seven Pontiac dealerships and nearly 450 miles later, no luck. There was one more dealership to visit, which happened to be right around the corner from my house at the time. I used to torture myself by going down there and drooling on the showroom glass when they were closed if they had a WS6 on the floor. Well, I'd been by the dealership the night before and they didn't have one, so we skipped that dealer altogether. For grins, my dad handed me his cell phone and said, "Give them a try."
I got the salesman on the phone. He said, and I quote:
"If you'd called me two hours ago, I'd have told you I didn't have a WS6 available. BUT... a guy just withdrew his deposit on a 30th Anniversary WS6 that is sitting on my lot right now."
It was Saturday night, the dealership was about 30 minutes from closing and that's just about how far away we were. We broke every traffic law under the sun trying to get to the dealer. And we just barely made it.
The car wasn't in the showroom or the lot, it was in the back in storage. As we walked around the corner of the building into the storage lot, I could see her white nose poking out from the crowd of plain Trans Am's. As we got closer to her, she had every scrap of protective plastic from delivery still stuck to her. The salesman handed me the keys and I turned the engine over.
Without even test driving it, I bought the car.
My salesman and one finance guy stayed late to sell me the car. The sales manager pulled the car out from behind the storage lot gates to where people could see the car from the road passing by. FOUR different people stopped to make offers on the car. My dad was standing outside next to it to keep gawkers at bay while I was doing the paperwork. That's how rare and desirable the car was when I got it. In fact, about every other time I take it out, someone offers to buy it from me and I have a standing offer from a gentleman who collects Trans Ams to buy it for the same price I paid 5+ years ago. That guy used to frequent a car show that I used to organize and would badger me every time out... can you see why I have it in an air conditioned garage? I even had a motion detector added to my house alarm to protect the garage. :p
Anyway... I digress. 90 minutes later, after signing my life away, I slipped into the car for the first time. Still covered in plastic, I turned the engine over for the first time as her owner... and she came to life. As I pulled out of the parking lot, I noticed that the odometer read 0.9 miles!
My dad always used to tell stories about when he got his first new car - a 1968 302 Mustang notchback with a bench seat. He told me about the first song he ever heard on the radio driving the car home... he turned on the radio and his favorite, Credence Clearwater was playing. Since there was little chance of Dream Theater being on the radio, I'd brought my favorite CD at the time, DT's "Awake". I took the t-tops off and slipped the CD in, skipped to track three, and for the first time, pulled out onto the highway. We took it home, removed the plastic, polished it up, and proceeded to take it out cruising. We put over 150 miles on the car that Saturday night. My wife was working in a restaurant at the time. You should have seen her face when I pulled up to her work in the car!
Whenever I would take the car over to my parents' house, my dad always had to go get a gallon of milk - and of course, he wanted to take the T/A to get it. ;) Who wouldn't want to? Maybe JMR.
It's a long story how the car became known as "Bluestreak", my namesake, but I'll tell that one someday too.
Every time I move that car, it's like the first time. I worked so hard to get it - and I worked harder to make it the beast it is today. I have trophies, racing and show, impressive 1/4 mile times, and more memories than I can recall attached to the car.
A friend once asked me what it would take for me to part with it. I told him that six-figures might make me think about it. And that's no joke. Cars were one of the very few things my dad and I had in common. Along with my classic Pontiac that we worked on together, it's like if I have those cars I'll always have something my dad loved, and it's like he's there every time I work on them. I've been called obsessive over my cars, but if you have to ask why, you'll never understand just what they mean to me, and what they meant to me and my dad.
Bluestreak November 23rd, 2004, 02:10 PM Yeah, i'm definitely more into the appearance aspect, but don't get me wrong, smoking the new vettes would be really really sweet :D
And exhaust and a program later, you'll be on par with the new 'Vettes. A heads/cam package later, you'll be in front of 99.44% of the cars you'll meet on the highway. ;) Be careful... once you get that sweet tooth for horsepower... it never goes away!
o0oMegso0o November 23rd, 2004, 05:56 PM I am totally going to butt in here, being a girl, I might be ignored. hahahaha.
I'm a car gal, sort of I'm still learning. I got into it with my husband, he's still teaching me. He likes to lower and beef up every freakin' thing that pulls in our driveway. LOL It's hilarious, it's also VERY addicting. (If you got the money to really dish out for some of this stuff)
My husband sports a 88' Lowered S-10 Blazer, blue, twin hood scoops, sun roof, nice mags, but not chrome even though they are identical to his steering wheel, that was purely coincidental. Ummmmmm...... nice system that is small but hits HARD, he has the inside dynamated up (not sure thats spelled right). He's WANTING to drop a v-8 in it and put a larger system, new paint and such. But I have a fear of driving to fast so I'm always giving him hell about putting something in here and getting killed. Although I know with a V-8 in something that is built for a v6 would need a new or modyfied rear end, maybe that will slow him down.
Thanks for letting me butt in. I love cars/ TRUCKS (I am a TRUCK girl. TRUCK TRUCK TRUCK!!! )

Toolish November 23rd, 2004, 08:10 PM I am into cars in a big way...
Love my Holden's, specifically Commodores (unless you are Australian you may have never heard of them). Holden originally designed the Monaro which was later modified to suit the American market and became the Pontiac GTO.

Been aware of the Holdens for a long time Toolish, great looking car!
I don't get why Pontiac didn't come up with their own design for the new GTO, but then again I wouldn't complain much as that car is gorgeous.

Good to hear...dream car is a VY SS Ute. As for the GTO/Monaro I am undecided as to which version I prefer. Although there was a new monaro release about 3-4 months back that looks awesome...takes parts from the first series of the new Monaro (their used to be a monaro around in the 70's) and the GTO.
Once I get access to my home computer again (probably a week or two away) will post some pics in this thread I think :)

Thanks for the compliment! I'm running a 3.4" for now. I wanted to go the DUB route, but just never ended up getting into it enough... about the only other thing I'd like to do would be a DHP PCM. I've also got a custom exhaust setup w/ the dual-dual chrome tips. I'm wanting to get into a newer truck, too! lol. Do I see a trend here?? Take it easy!

kingink November 24th, 2004, 06:39 AM I love cars but don't have the money to fix them up anymore. I currently have a completely stock, not even sticker powered, 1999 Honda Civic Lx. I used to have a 1974 Chevy Nova with 350 v8, a 1970 Mustang with 351 Cleveland, and a 1974 jeep cj5. I still like the Nova look and would love to have a 1963 -1967 Nova Super Sport to fix and drive like I stole it.
Toolish November 24th, 2004, 05:47 PM Here's my car at the moment .... Opel Astra
The astra is a nice looking car (especially as a Holden :p). Not sure what the trend is over there, but in Australia have seen a lot with clear tail light assemblies, looks awesome, especially on silver and black cars.
Bluestreak November 24th, 2004, 09:57 PM ...a lot with clear tail light assemblies, looks awesome, especially on silver and black cars.
Unfortunately, styling trends stink in this area. Most things are so overdone it's not worth making mods to your car's appearance unless it comes in the form of a nice paint job.
The clear tail lights and clear marker lights have become so cliche due to the import crowd here that I won't even put clear front marker lights on my Mustang, and I think they kinda look cool on the 87-93 Fox Mustangs.
Probably my favorite thing to snicker at comes (mostly) on the imports - they do the aluminum wing - anywhere from 1 to 3 feet tall - they absolutely kill me! It's comedy at it's finest. Those little four/six bangers couldn't use that much downforce if they pushed the car off a cliff! Hell, my Trans Am doesn't need a wing that big! It looks more like an F-15 fighter jet somewhere is missing its tail fin...
I finally chose a body shop for my Mustang... some prep work over the holidays and it's off to the body shop for a couple of new lightweight fiberglass doors (no more rust!), a paint job and a new built 302!

Evil Hx Coupe November 24th, 2004, 10:07 PM Glad to see alot of car people here. :tu:
My current car:
1996 Honda Civic HX
- Nex Full Coilover Suspension
- DC Sports Short Shifter
- Type R Front/Rear Lip
- JDM CTR Headlights
- JDM CTR Grill
- JDM CTR Shift Boot/Shift Knob
- 99/00 Si Tail Lights
- 17" ADR Flite 4 Black/Silver Wheels
- Brand new Coral Red Painjob (stock color)
Nothing is done to the motor... It will be swapped out for something better in about a month, and then it's going to see a bit of boost by the summer :).
1FastGTX November 25th, 2004, 03:22 AM Bluestreak: I agree on the clear markers. When they first came out I was about to buy them for my truck, then I saw them EVERYWHERE on the imports so I thought I might look silly. :)
Can't wait to hear about your upcoming mods, sounds fun man, congrats.
Evil Hx Coupe: EXCITING! So you're dropping a blower in there? I am assuming that's where "boost" came from... You'll love it, I don't know that I'd buy another sports car without one now that I've experienced it. The sound is AMAZING coming from the hood, it sounds like a freaking jet.

I'm doing turbo, they seem to be better for this little motors. My friend just finished his full build up and turbo setup (making 425WHP 21LBS daily driven) and I knew I had to get boost the minute I drove the car...
I gotta stop talking about this, if not I'm going to start charging creditcards instead of waiting to have the money.... :)
lostmind November 25th, 2004, 03:33 PM Just picked up a subaru wrx, 2002, 60,000 km, black last week. Insanely long list of *future mods* I want to do... but we'll see how many actually get done :)
As it stands, the 227hp and awd make the car fun to drive.
J2kDarkSkies November 25th, 2004, 08:13 PM I'm doing turbo, they seem to be better for this little motors. My friend just finished his full build up and turbo setup (making 425WHP 21LBS daily driven) and I knew I had to get boost the minute I drove the car...

21 lbs of boost is a daily driver?
Chris November 28th, 2004, 03:11 AM I'm an expert in LS1 modifications and I have built everything you can think of where an LS1 is concerned.
Hey Blue, I know when you said you were an expert you were referring to engine mods, but I thought maybe you might be able to help with my question.
I just installed the low beam HID's but the beam pattern is a lot more spread out than I expected, I know nobody mass produces the projectors so i'll probably have to get them custom made which is gonna be a pretty penny, but do you know if there's a cheaper alternative to focusing the light?
Bluestreak November 28th, 2004, 10:47 AM Wish I could help, but I have no clue.

Guess I either have to just redirect the beams upwards slightly OR completely custom mold my housing which would give it that european look but also cost about $800
Guess i'll have to see what the beam pattern looks like when I change the angle of the light, hopefully that will make it better, without costing me anything!
Emilio November 29th, 2004, 01:04 AM Hey everyone,
Throw another honda boy in here. 00 Accord v6 coupe. My first car and I really do enjoy it. Mods are:
Wings West type W kit(subtle lip kit)
17in Mille Migle(sp?) wheels
Short Ram
Thermal R&D axelbacks
Eclipse HU/Components/6x9 3 ways/sub
Pheonix Gold 5ch amp
Optima yellow top
other lil stuff..
Its my daily so I can't drop it (horrible winters here in Rochester) and I really don't want to put anymore cash into it. Nice car overall but I'm saving my money for something different. I want a bike real bad... like insanely bad but my father hates them and so does the rest of my family.. and frankly the way people drive these days I am not so sure I want to risk it. So instead I am thinking of doing 1 of two things. Either a. building a car for the next 2005 challenge (grassroots motorsports challenge where you must build the best overall car with $2005) or buying a project miata and road race/autocross the hell out of it.

lostmind November 29th, 2004, 03:21 AM Can I vote for the miata? Its like a freakin go kart man! So fun.

I've autocrossed a couple of Miatas over the years. Those cars are a 100% blast to throw around the curves. I got to drive a blown Miata once - it was making 267-RWHP. Now that was fun!

Emilio November 29th, 2004, 06:23 PM Yeah I love early 90's miatas. They can be had for a decent price too. I am thinking of buying one come summer time instead of a bike. Should be oh so very fun.
